Chilly winds, warm woolens, the aroma of cold cream on your hands… winter's finally here! We all look forward to the three-month hiatus the weather Gods give us from the sweltering heat. It is time to gather family and friends and celebrate - be it Christmas, New Year's Eve or even weddings. Winter months bring along exciting opportunities to dress up and look your best in your finest silks and jewelery without feeling the least bit uncomfortable.
The only negative aspects about winter are the minor irritations that you face like dry skin, chapped lips and fly away hair. We give some simple tips below to counter these (and more) problems and give you a natural, healthy glow!
For Dry Skin
Before You Bathe
Mix a teaspoon of honey in 2 tablespoons of milk or cream and massage it into your face and neck. After about twenty minutes, take a shower with warm water.
In your Bath
Add 10-12 drops of coconut oil in your bathing water or apply coconut oil to your body before taking a bath. You could also add a few drops of essential oils like that of lavender to your bath to add aroma.
When Washing Your Face
Do not use soap. Add a teaspoon of olive oil to about three teaspoons of gram flour, you can add a teaspoon of cream or milk to soften the paste. Apply it all over your face and neck. After 10 minutes, rub the (dried) paste gently off your face till all off it flakes off. Then wash your face with luke warm water. Doing this regularly will gently exfoliate the dry skin off and make your skin absorb creams and moisturisers better.
Moisturising Your Face
Mix 1/4 cup rose water, 1/4 cup pure glycerine, 1/4 teaspoon honey and keep. Use this lotion to moisturize your face regularly after cleansing.
Before Going to Sleep
Apply cold cream all over you face and neck and after 15-min wipe off with moist cotton.
To soften your hands, rub them with a mixture made of equal parts of rosewater and glycerine
Apply a body lotion all over your body, if you suffer from excessively dry skin, massage baby oil on your body to get baby soft skin
Apply moisturiser before applying make-up. It will prevent your face from feeling dry and stretched and keep the makeup stay on for a long time.
For chapped lips
Moisten your lips with water, with a soft baby tooth brush, gently scrub the dry skin off your lips. Then apply a mixture of Vaseline and honey on your lips. Leave on for ten minutes then wash off with warm water.
You can also apply pure glycerine on your lips to get relief from dryness.
Keep a chapstick with you at all times and apply on your lips whenever they feel dry.
To Lighten Tanned Skin
Grate a potato, extract it's juice and apply liberally over affected area. Wash off with water after15 minutes.
To Condition Dry Hair
Use this honey-enriched conditioner to bring back soft, lustrous hair.
This is what you'll need
- One egg
- One teaspoon of honey
- Two teaspoons of coconut oil
Beat up the white of the egg till it is stiff. Mix the honey and coconut oil with this. Massage this mixture into the scalp. Steam your hair with towels soaked in warm water and then shampoo.
Don't forget to drink lots of water, fruit juices and salads and greens packed with vitamins to see you through the cool winter months.
